The fourth arterial in Hastings iWay walking and cycling network will be officially opened this Sunday (7th October) at 10.30am at the Hawke’s Bay showgrounds.

The Hastings to Clive pathway starts near the CBD and runs past the Hawke’s Bay Showgrounds, along the verge of Otene Road and then onto the banks of the Clive River, before taking to State Highway Two for the short ride into Clive township.

Deputy Mayor Cynthia Bowers says “Walking and cycling are an important part of the modern urban transport system. Cycling in particular is an efficient way of getting around our city at low cost, provides health benefits and doesn’t contribute to pollution, traffic congestion or noise.”

“This new arterial is the ideal complement to the other on and off road paths in the iWay network as well as the Rotary pathways and the Hawke’s Bay Trail. The Clive pathway has a bit of everything for the cyclist; from riding through our urban streets, to enjoying the peace and solitude as you ride by farms and revelling in the vista that unfolds in front of you as you ride along the banks of the Clive River.”

“All participants in the iWay Market Ride will have the chance to enjoy shopping or browsing around the Farmers’ Market before the official opening and again after the ride. The market is such an iconic part of Hastings’ Sunday morning lifestyle and we are delighted that the new pathway will provide cyclists with a link to the market from the city centre or Clive.”

The official opening of the pathway begins at 10.30am this Sunday and the iWay Market Ride starts around 11am. Cyclists will return to the showgrounds at the end of their ride for the prizegiving which starts at midday.
