Residents warned against early TV recycling

Hastings TV recycling amnesty period is just under a week away, but residents are already dumping their TVs at the designated recycling site.

Hastings District Council along with the Ministry for the Environment (MFE) , and RCN e-Cycle have arranged an amnesty period where TVs can be recycled free of charge. The amnesty period begins this Saturday October 13th but TVs are already being left at the designated drop off site in St Aubyn Street.

Waste Minimisation Officer Dominic Salmon says “It’s great that residents are recognizing the need to recycle their TVs in a responsible manner, rather than just throwing them in the rubbish which would see them end up at the landfill.”

“We want to continue to encourage residents to recycle their TVs but it is crucial that they do not drop them off at the old Mitre 10 site in St Aubyns Street before the amnesty begins. From Saturday October 13th when the amnesty period begins we will have staff at the site who will help unload the TVs from cars and store them safely in containers ready for transport to RCN e-Cycle’s premises in Auckland and Wellington. There they will be dismantled and all the usable material will be recycled.”

“We ask that you keep your old TV until Saturday October 13th then bring it to the dedicated drop off site for collection.”

Free TV recycling will be available at the old Mitre 10 site in St Aubyn Street from Saturday October 13th to Sunday October 28th   9 am - 4pm daily.

Following the end of the amnesty period the Environment Centre in Russell Street, Hastings and the Henderson Road recycling centre will continue to accept television sets for disposal but there will be a charge, although it will be at a heavily discounted rate.

NOTE: Just dropping off your TV at the Mitre Ten site before the amnesty period begins is classed as illegal dumping on private property and could result in an infringement notice being issued. For more information about this worthwhile TV recycling programme visit www.tvtakeback.govt.nz
