The quad bike accident that led to the death of a 10 year old boy is a tragic reminder of dangers associated with quad bikes.

“One of the four key messages of the Quad Bike Safety project is that kids should not be allowed to ride adult-size quads,” says Francois Barton, Labour Group’s Programme Manager – Harm Reduction.

“This morning’s tragic accident is a grim reminder of the dangers quad bikes pose to riders, however confident they may appear. These large and complex machines are not toys, and riders require significant experience and training to operate them safely.”

The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment was called to the scene of the accident and is making preliminary enquiries.

The key messages of the Quad Bike Safety project are:

  • Riders must be trained/experienced enough to do the job
  • Choose the right vehicle for the job
  • Always wear a helmet
  • Never let kids ride adult quad bikes.
