20 teams will be taking to Ongley Park on Sunday as part of the Social Sixes Cricket Festival being organised by Sport Manawatu and Manawatu Cricket Association.

The festival offers a chance for people who aren’t currently involved in organised cricket to get involved in the sport at a social level.  With prizes on offer for the best team uniform/costume there should be some interesting and colourful outfits on show.

The concept of a one day social six-a-side tournament has been popular with the 20 team spots available in the festival being filled in late September and a waiting list of teams being created.  Of the 146 players registered for the tournament only 20 are currently involved in any type of organised cricket so many will be padding up for the first time in a while (or maybe ever!).  The tournament includes teams from local workplaces, student teams, groups of mates and family based teams with abilities ranging from absolute beginners to social but competitive.

On the day each field will have two matches running at a time so there is no waiting time needed for teams to pad up and teams don’t have to wait long between matches.

If the weather is not good enough to hold the tournament this Sunday the postponement date is Sunday 27th January 2013 (when warmer weather should be more assured).

Date: Sunday 14 October 2012
Time: Matches from 10.30am – 3.30pm
Location: Ongley Park, Palmerston North
