Council has adjusted its roadside mowing regime, cutting less often and freeing up funds for other projects. From now on verges will be trimmed twice a year. In the past cutting was based on grass height, and might be trimmed three or four times a year, says Transportation Maintenance Engineer Selwyn Steedman.

The mowing will take place in October and February, although that may vary according to growing conditions. In built-up areas, the grass will not be cut if it is less than 10cm high, and in rural areas 20cm high.

“We are allowing the grass to grow longer before we mow it.” That has a safety spinoff in giving better visual definition to the edge of the road, says Selwyn.

The contractor mows to 1.5m back from the road edge.
