Proud time in Lakes District

This is a proud week in the Queenstown Lakes District, QLDC Mayor Vanessa van Uden said.

Yesterday marked the opening of the 110km Queenstown Trail, the celebration of the 100th year of the TSS Earnslaw, which continues throughout the week, and day one of the four-day Willowridge Wanakafest.

“Not to mention what is shaping up to be an incredible weekend, there is every reason for our communities to feel a hell of a lot of pride,” QLDC Mayor Vanessa van Uden said.

The weekend will mark the 150th anniversary of the discovery of gold in the district, which will focus on Arrowtown and Glenorchy, with Wanaka set to enjoy this evening’s Kahu Youth Street Parade and celebrations marking the 25th anniversary of Mount Aspiring College.

Tomorrow would also see the Wanaka Wine and Food Fest get underway and the Queenstown Jazz Fest launch into the swing of things. Not to mention the various sport events scheduled.

“There is so much happening in our communities and there is a lot to celebrate. I hope everyone has a moment like me yesterday, to think, ‘this is why I live in this amazing district’,” Mayor van Uden said.

In encouraging the community to take time with family and friends to enjoy what was on offer, the Mayor also credited those working tirelessly behind the scenes to make these occasions special.

“There are countless people who give of their time to ensure these events and celebrations are a success, many of whom have literally spent years planning for these events. I really have to pay tribute to you all for your time, your passion and your true sense of community,” she said.
