Just under 3000 pizzas flew out the door during one of Dominos Whangarei’s busiest weekends on record – coincidentally also the weekend of its 12th birthday celebrations.

Franchise owner Jayesh Madhav says he was thrilled by the huge turn-out.

“It was truly a mega weekend for us in terms of sales records. We were aiming to break the NZ record for the most pizzas sold in one weekend – we missed out by about 100 pizzas. But while we didn’t make that record, it was the biggest weekend we’d had since the store became a Domino’s six years ago, and the second biggest ever for the Water St store. So we achieved some huge personal milestones thanks to the hard work of all the staff!”

The previous record for the most pizzas sold was 1100 in one day, which was beaten by the new record of 1824 pizzas sold on the Saturday of the anniversary celebrations.

“We had some fantastic deals and customers were lining up around the block just to enjoy the atmosphere and of course, get some delicious pizza for value prices! We sold our value range that weekend for $3.99 and you could see a lot of excited faces in the crowd, especially the kids. We had free face painting for children while-you-wait, and our store mascot Pepperoni Pete welcomed the customers into the store.”

Madhav says store staff also distributed more than 400 free lollipops. The store was decorated with coloured balloons – some staff came in at 7am, two hours before opening, to help blow them up.

“All our pizza ovens were running full steam the whole weekend and apart from our loyal staff, the family also pitched in. My wife did the dishes out back and our kids were right in there up at the front counter helping to take orders and helping out with the face painting. It was truly a family affair – and by that, I also mean the staff that were on during the weekend, we couldn’t have done it with them.”

The Water St store became part of the Domino’s family six years ago – and Madhav has been there every step of the way. He says that joining Domino’s has allowed him to participate more actively within the Northland community.

“It’s been a wonderful feeling being encouraged to give back to the community through Domino’s many sponsorship initiatives. Apart from Doughraisers, we’ve helped out local schools with prizes and recently made a donation for an event at a local art gallery where they were promoting local artists – we donated half the pizzas, and did a special deal for the other half. We also sponsor a soccer team by supplying them with uniforms,” says Madhav.
