PICTON

Picton people will have noticed the digging that’s going on around the streets of their town as new underground cabling is installed.

It’s bringing Picton its new, free public WiFi service. Picton councillor David Oddie says it’s great to think anyone in the town will have free access to the internet with their laptops, tablets and smartphones by this summer.

“People will be able to sit outside in the sun at cafes or public spaces and log on, so it should also take some pressure off the facilities at Picton’s library, which does get very crowded,” says Councillor Oddie.

He says retailers and police will be pleased to know that new closed circuit television security cameras will be installed in the Picton CBD at the same time, using the same cable trenches.

Security cameras will be located at sites where there are Council assets or where police have concerns about public safety or criminal behaviour. The Council and the police will be able to view all camera feeds.
Blenheim is scheduled to get the same facilities by April next year.
