Over time the region’s roads become worn due to traffic use and damaged due to the weather. It’s therefore important that we carry out proactive road maintenance works.

Marlborough Roads maintenance contractors will soon begin their annual road maintenance works; these works will take place throughout the region both on the local roads and the state highways.

These works normally start late October and finish towards the end of April. Due to the nature of the works it’s inevitable that some traffic delays will occur.

To reduce unnecessary delays some of these works are carried out during the night. We also, when necessary, inform adjacent homeowners and businesses by letter of the intended works.

There are two types of annual road maintenance works:

Pavement treatment: The pavement is the foundation of the road and generally lasts 25 years or sometimes more.

The pavement treatment works usually involves placing aggregate over the existing road surface, generally 100mm deep. The aggregate is shaped and then rolled ready to be chip sealed.

Carrying out these works helps ensure that the road pavement lasts for another 25 years.

Re-sealing of the road surface: Most of our sealed road surfaces last for around 8 to 10 years. Around this time it is important that we re-seal the road surface to keep the road waterproofed and also to ensure that we maintain a smooth and safe surface to drive on.

We generally use two types of road surfacing:

  • Chip seal
  • Asphalt concrete
