Families now have more choices for fun in Napier with the completion of the family-friendly Spray Park at Napier Aquatic Centre.

On Tuesday 30th October Mayor Barbara Arnott will officially open the water play park, and then on Saturday 3rd November a public open day will be held from 12pm – 4pm for all to experience this great new family attraction.

The initiative was sparked by a desire of Napier City Council to provide a revitalised and unique area for families to utilise and enjoy at the Napier Aquatic Centre and the removal of the old obsolete outdoor pool offered that opportunity.

Planning got underway in February 2011 and Paris Magdalinos Architects were assigned the task of designing this unique family attraction.  Once the plans were set construction commenced in November 2011 and a mere 12 months later it is now ready for families to enjoy.

In place of the old pool, and utilising the entire area at the heart of the aquatic centre, now sits the new family friendly facilities incorporating something for everyone.  Along with the zero-depth Spray Park furnished with “toys” such as water jets, fixed aqua balls, umbrellas and bows designed to spurt water, is a flying fox, volleyball courts, additional play equipment and barbecue facilities sure to keep the whole family entertained all day during the summer months.

Everyone is encouraged to join in the fun on 3 November at the new Spray Park.  The Edge radio are hosting the festivities, which include bouncy castles, games, giveaways and food stalls, and Flight Centre have a family trip to the Gold Coast, Australia to give away to one lucky family.  There will be a special entry price of just $2 for children and adults (under 5s are free) and includes a water slide pass.
