How about a walk in bush, with sea views, and birdsong, all not far from Picton? Try the walk to Davies Bay (Umangata Bay) on the Queen Charlotte Track. Drive to the small settlement of Anakiwa at the head of the Queen Charlotte Sound, and you’ll find the start of the famous Queen Charlotte Track. It’s about an hour walk along the track to Davies Bay, a popular picnic spot, and really beautiful little bay. The beach is safe, and there is a Department of Conservation campsite and toilets.

The path from Anakiwa to Davies Bay is wide and easy running through mature forest featuring large beech trees. Look out for waxeyes, tomtits, finches, fantails and wekas. Glance through the trees for views of kayaks and yachts on the water. You may even get lucky and see some of the little blue penguins and pods of dolphins that make the Sounds their home.
