Youth Ambassador Marcus Akuhata-Brown was recently in Taupo to motivate and inspire our young people and community groups and organisations who work with young people as part of Council’s Community Development Youth Action Plan.

Taupo District Council’s Community Development Team invited Mr Akuhata-Brown to meet with over 100 representatives from Taupo Nui-a-Tia College and Tauhara College to stimulate youth and encourage them to be a part of the Community Development Youth Action Plan – a plan designed to address local youth issues based on surveys and research carried out last year.

Mr Akuhata-Brown, a gifted communicator who has a wealth of experience working with youth, has been a youth ambassador representing New Zealand and has led a number of innovative alternative education programmes for youth at risk. He entertained everyone with stories of his past and told of the positive changes and opportunities he took to ensure he would have his voice heard by decision makers not only in New Zealand, but also internationally. Taupo youth were encouraged to voice their opinions and participate in brainstorming sessions regarding positive things about Taupo, how Taupo could be improved, local youth issues and life skills that could be introduced.

In the afternoon community groups and organisations who work with youth were taken through an update of Council's Community Development Team's Youth Action Plan. Mr Akuhata-Brown played a facilitation role and encouraged people to provide feedback on the plan to assist the Community Development Team with their direction for the future.

Mr Akuhata-Brown’s visit was funded by the Council’s ‘Mayors Taskforce for Jobs’.
