Kiwis love their credit cards. In fact, according to Statistics New Zealand, in June 2016 Kiwi credit card holders made 128 million transactions – spending a total of over $6billion.

So with all that credit card activity, Kiwis want to know they are choosing the right credit card – a card that ultimately works for them. But with so many cards on the market offering rewards, frequent flyer points or other sweeteners, how do you know you’re getting the right credit card?

The first step is to consider your own spending habits. How much do you spend in a month or year? Some rewards programmes only offer rewards once you spend over a certain amount. But who wants to spend more than they actually intended – incurring more debt in the process – just to receive the reward?

In the recent Canstar Credit Card Awards, Warehouse Money’s Purple Visa Card was given a 5-star rating for the very fact that it provides outstanding value to its customers. The Warehouse Money Purple Visa Card was praised not just for the rewards it offers customers – you earn Purple Dollars every time you use your card anywhere Visa is accepted – but the rewards kick in no matter how much you spend on your card in a month or year. It was also praised for having no set up fees, nor annual fees or additional cardholder fees.

To come up with their ratings for the credit cards, Canstar compares the dollar value of points earned each year with the cost of the card and its annual fees.Warehouse Money’s Purple Visa Card was previously awarded 5-Stars for its Rewards Programme – but was this year singled out as offering outstanding value and a whole new level of innovation in the credit card space.

And it doesn’t stop there. Where many Rewards schemes have points that expire after three years – and some expire within six months – Purple Dollars never expire and customers can redeem their points instantly at the till on the very same card. Most other Rewards providers issue paper vouchers or require customers to go online to redeem their rewards at a later date.

Purple Visa Cards earn customers two Purple Dollars every time they spend $150 at The Warehouse in-store or online and one Purple Dollar when they spend $150 elsewhere. The rewards can only be redeemed in store at The Warehouse.

There are a number of credit card reward programmes out there – each with their own offers or rewards – so ultimately it pays to think about what you need from a credit card and the programme that offers the most benefit to you.
