Now that the new Health & Safety recommendations have become law, working smoke alarms or detectors have become compulsory in all rental homes, so the team at First Point Electrical have noticed a big upsurge in customers requiring their expertise in installing smoke detectors.

Smoke alarms must be installed within three meters of each bedroom door, or in every room where a person sleeps. They must also be installed in each level or story of a multi-story or multi-level home, and in all rental homes, boarding houses, rental caravans, and self-contained sleep-outs.

All new smoke alarms must be photoelectric, have a battery life of at least eight years, or be hard-wired and installed according to the manufacturer’s instructions. They must also meet international standards. Existing smoke alarms do not need to be replaced if they are working, or have not passed the manufacturer’s expiry date.

Smoke alarm best practice recommendations from the New Zealand Fire Service, include the facts that landlords and tenants are responsible for maintaining smoke alarms and landlors must ensure smoke alarms are in working order and are working at the start of each new tenancy.

First Point Electrical install CAVIUS Smoke Alarms which combine state of the art electronics with superior product design to produce the world’s smallest Photoelectric Smoke Alarms and Thermal Heat Alarms, both with a 10 year battery. After significant investment building, renovating or redecorating your home, there is no better way to complement your design and protect your family than with the aesthetically pleasing CAVIUS range.
