Papakura District Council is taking action to reduce crashes at the District’s worst “black spot” intersection, where Spartan Road meets Great South Road in Takanini.

Council roading engineers will modify the intersection to prohibit right hand turns out of Spartan Road and across all lanes of traffic to go north on Great South Road. Work will start on 6 January 2010. Businesses and residents of the area have been advised of the work by mail, and an electronic signboard will be set up near the intersection to let motorists know about of the coming work programme.

Traffic will be able to use the nearby Manuroa Road intersection, which is controlled by traffic signals, to safely turn out onto Great South Road in either direction.

Other improvements will be made to manage the change of traffic densities including providing a right turn “pocket” on Spartan Road at the Oakleigh Avenue/Westbrook Avenue intersection to make room for turning vehicles at this intersection; widening Spartan Road at the Great South Road intersection to allow larger vehicles to turn left into or out of Spartan Road more easily; and changing the operation of the traffic signals at the intersection of Manuroa Road and Great South Road to accommodate increased traffic volumes at this intersection.

Two queuing lanes, a left turn lane and a right turn lane, have recently been installed on Oakleigh Avenue at the Manuroa Road intersection to accommodate the additional traffic that will use this intersection when right turns from Spartan Road are prohibited.
