Upper Hutt rifle incident

UPPER HUTT

At approx 16:45 a male was reported to be at an address in Sanford St, Upper Hutt who was waving a rifle around.
There were two other occupants at the address at the time that fled the scene.
Occupants of nearby houses in Sanford were advised to remain in their houses.
The male, in his early 20's, left the address and walked to the grounds of Upper Hutt College which is a distance of approximately 250 mtrs.
Specialist squads were deployed and the areas were cordoned off for a short period.
Once in the grounds the male has disguarded the rifle and continued walking towards the northern end of the school grounds.
At approx 17:30 the male was apprehended near the school grounds. The rifle was located near by, at this stage it is unknown at what state of readiness the rifle was.
During this incident Police received another report relating to the sighting of a male with a rifle at a nearby address in Hikurangi St. Police have taken a precautionary measure and dealt with this as a second incident and cordoned off Hikurangi St.
AOS were deployed to ensure that the second address and surrounding areas were safe.
The male is in custody, the rifle has been located and all cordones relating to both incidents have been removed and roads open.
