Hutt City Libraries and the Australasian Police and Emergency Services Games (AP&ES) have teamed up to hold a children’s art competition to celebrate our police and emergency services ‘heroes’.

The AP&ES Games are coming to Lower Hutt from 2-9 March and are expected to attract about 2,000 participants from New Zealand, Australia and the Pacific Islands to compete in 41 sports.

The theme of the competition is ‘Heroes - on and off the field’ and children aged 5-13 are encouraged to show their artistic skills to create an art work that captures what this means to them.

This could be anything, for example, a painting of a firefighter tackling Sonny Bill Williams, a sculpture of a police car, or a drawing of an ambulance worker helping someone in need.

The maximum size of paintings/drawings is A3 and 60cm high for sculptures.

AP&ES marketing manager Scott Willson says there are great prizes up for grabs.

"The winner in each age group – 5-8 and 9-13 years – will get to be the flag-bearer for a team in the Games opening ceremony and enjoy a ride to school in a fire engine.”

Hutt City Libraries’ Susan Hill says she looks forward to seeing lots of creative entries.

“All the art will be on display at our libraries, and also at the sports venues during the week of the Games.

”Entry forms are available from any of the city’s eight libraries, and artworks should be with the War Memorial Library by Friday, 17 February.
