The Tasman District Council has decided to retain courtesy crossings in Richmond. While the crossings have been proven as the safest form of crossing this does not negate the need for care to be taken by pedestrians and drivers alike.

“During the recent debate sparked by the recent accident in Richmond a number of opinions were publicised, both for and against”, said Engineering Chairman Trevor Norriss. “What we were concerned with was ensuring we had the facts on which to base any decision about their future.”

“We have seen these, balanced them with the public comment and still only been able to come to one conclusion – courtesy crossings are the safest form of crossing bar tunnels and overbridges.”

“The recent crash has been the only incident since 2003. When compared to pedestrian crossings or light controlled crossings the difference is 10-fold in favour of the raised crossings.”

“Yes they do rely on courtesy and care from both parties and it appears the vast majority of people living in or visiting Richmond know how to use them.”

A discussion regarding the possible addition of simple signage reminding users of their responsibilities has been deferred until the next meeting for the gathering of more information regarding the need and application.
