Fishing contests are the latest community projects in the Far North to get financial support from Te Hiku Community Board.

The board gave out $21,442 in community grants at its monthly meeting at Awanui on 14 November.

The Captain Morgan Snapper Bonanza received $10,000 to fund a surf rescue operation at the popular surfcasting contest at Ninety Mile Beach from 26 February to 2 March.

The grant takes total money the Far North District Council has committed to the 2013 contest to $20,000.

The board also gave $3,650 to the Mangonui Fire Brigade to hire portable toilets and marquees for the Doubtless Bay Fishing Contest on 26-27 January.

Other groups to get grants were:

  • Far North Avocado Trust which received $4,400 towards costs of staging a Santa Parade and Christmas Carnival in Kaitaia on 1 December
  • Houhora Bowling Club which received $1,685 towards $13,685 costs of buying a bowling green mower
  • Tokerau Beach-Whatuwhiwhi Residents and Ratepayers Association which received $1,307 to upgrade a public garden welcoming visitors to Karikari Peninsula and $400 towards costs of laying on a Christmas dinner for senior citizens.
