Royal Commission report closure for families

The Royal Commission's report into the Christchurch earthquakes is a thorough and insightful examination of why the CTV building failed and 115 people were killed, the Green Party said today.

"Across the spectrum, we agree that the recommendations in the Commission's report must be carefully considered," said Green Party Christchurch spokesperson Eugenie Sage.

"The Commission's recommendations need to be taken on board by Government and councils across the country.

"Nothing can compensate the families, friends and colleagues of those who died.

"Thanks are due to Justice Mark Cooper and Commissioners Sir Ronald Carter and Richard Fenwick, the 80 witnesses, and those who worked on this inquiry so that we have the information we need to keep people safe in the future.

"We should especially thank the witnesses who survived the building's collapse and the loved ones of those who died for sharing their experiences with the Commission.

"The report and its findings are an opportunity to improve building regulations and their implementation to prevent any other tragedies of this nature.

"The Commission's findings highlight the importance of sound building standards, buildings being designed and built by qualified people in accordance with those standards, and the need for thorough compliance monitoring.

"Investing in sound regulation and ensuring it is implemented helps keep people safe, which the way the CTV building was designed and built did not," said Ms Sage.
