ROTORUA

In conjuction with the well known Wild Moa Multisport Event there is now a swim option...The Wild Moa Off-Road Triathlon!

In its 6th year the Wild Moa Multisport Event is Rotorua's premier multisport event. It involves 67km's of some of New Zealand's most scenic wonderland. What better was to spend a day of your holiday on the 12 January 2008!

This year the Lactic Turkey Events team have decided to open the event up to a larger audience and offer a swim section as an alternative to the kayak section. This should appeal to those that prefer to be in the water rather than on top of it!

The 1km swim will start at the Tarawera Landing and follow a triangular course.

Once the swim is completed the participants in the Wild Moa Off-Road Triathlon will continue on the same mountain bike and run course as their multisport collegues who will have paddled from Lake Okataina to Lake Tarawera via the unique bush track portage (run 4km, kayak 7km, portage 1km and then kayak 9km).

The 32km mountain bike leg begins with 5km of sealed road before entering the forest at Blue Lake lookout. Mountain bikers familiar with the Whakarewarewa MTB park tracks will recognise the track names: Pondy downhill, Pondy new, Rollercoaster, Spring roll, Sweet and Sour, Be rude not to, Creek track, the Dipper, and Rock drop. The emphasis in course design has been to use the fun flowing single tracks – avoiding some of the more technical and rutted ones – and provide a balance with forest road riding.

The final 15km run leg is a challenging and very scenic loop starting and finishing at the majestic Redwoods.

With the spread in times ranging from around 4:30 – 9 hours for the multisport event and a predicted 2:50 – 6 hours for the triathlon, the event caters for all abilities. If you’re new to off-road triathlon the Wild Moa is the perfect event. In fact, we think it’s the best off-road tri course in Rotorua!
