Roading projects across the city have been timed to stop this week to ensure residents, shoppers, travellers and others using the city’s roads can get around without disruption.

Hamilton City Council has worked hard to ensure programmed work by its contractors on major roading projects as well as regular maintenance and resealing works are completed in the week before Christmas.

The past year has seen major progress in roading projects across the city. Recent work includes:

  • Completion of the four laning of Wairere Drive between Pukete Rd and Pukete Bridge, including smooth road surfacing
  • Upgrade of River Rd/Wairere Drive intersection upgrade and new traffic lights
  • Upgrade of The Base intersection and installation of traffic lights
  • Ongoing installation of Pukete Bridge pedestrian clip ons and panelling
  • Ring Road extension to Fifth Avenue, chip seal bedding in
  • NZTA completion and opening of Te Rapa section of the Waikato Expressway

Significant road works will get underway again in early January to take advantage of light traffic flows while people are still on holiday and schools are still closed. This will see major work start on the upgrade of the Peachgrove Rd/Ruakura Rd/Te Aroha St intersection, completion and opening in late January of Wairere Drive to Ruakura Road, and starting the four laning of Wairere Drive from Pukete Bridge to Resolution Drive.

Final smooth surfacing of the Ring Road extension to Fifth Ave will be done in late summer to allow existing seal to bed in.

Commenting Hamilton Mayor Julie Hardaker says: “Major improvements have been made to some strategic road networks in Hamilton this year, which will not only benefit our city economically, but have made the day to day getting around our city a whole lot easier.

“It’s pleasing to see a number of large and important transport infrastructure projects have been delivered on time and budget, and to a very high standard. My thanks to Hamiltonians for their patience while these have been completed.

“Our contractors have also worked hard to get projects completed before Christmas so there will be little road works related disruption during the festive season.”
