Key members of Federated Farmers’ Farmy Army were recognised last evening at the Canterbury Earthquake Awards.

“The individual recognition received was a well deserved tribute for their selfless contribution and commitment,” says John Hartnell, Federated Farmers Bees Chairperson and ‘Generalissimo’ of Federated Farmers’ Farmy Army.

“The five ‘Farmy Army’ people recognised last night accepted their awards really on behalf of the thousands who pitched in to help Christchurch.

“Our catering team of Nicky Geddes, Cathy Stephens and Helen Heddell deserve recognition for not only feeding farmers and students, but their on-going community commitment through to last Christmas.

“To my indomitable operations team of twin sisters Carly and Shona Sluys, can I say thank you.  You provided humour, organisation and sanity in equal measure.

“As the leader of Federated Farmers’ Farmy Army, nothing was possible without food and logistical support. In this we also owe a huge debt of gratitude to our colleagues from the SVA.

“Above all else, I applaud the special recognition given to the Canterbury Agricultural Park team.  Their generosity, kindness and commitment made the recovery effort possible.  They made their facilities fully available to the Farmy Army.

“Without the Canterbury Agricultural Park team we would have seriously struggled because it ended up as the pivotal volunteer hub.

“To my mind it proves there is no such thing as a rural-urban divide.  We are all New Zealanders and we do care for our fellow Kiwi in times of need.

“As for the countless more that selflessly helped out Christchurch in its hour of need, your legacy will live on as our city proudly rises again,” Mr Hartnell concluded.
