Police investigating the murder of Murray WILKINSON at Waihi Beach early on New Years Day want to hear from a member of the public who handed a knife in to a Security Guard at the scene on Thursday.

Waikato Police District Crime Manager, Detective Inspector Page, said that the person who handed in the knife on the evening of 03 January 2013 has done the right thing but unfortunately, the Security Guard did not record their details at the time.

"It is not known if this knife has anything to do with the incident, but for the investigation it is very important for us to know where the knife was found, when, and by who.

"These are the sorts of details that help us to determine what is and is not relevant in cases such as this."

Mr Page said teams of Police are continuing wider area searches today as the investigation heads into its fifth day and investigators have been buoyed by the high level of support shown by the public .

"If you were the person who handed the knife in or you have any other information, the Operation Brad team wants to speak to you."

The Operation Brad team can be contacted at the Waihi and Waihi Beach Police Stations, by ringing 0800 OP BRAD (0800 672723) or via email at Thames@police.govt.nz.

Alternatively, information can be left anonymously with Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
