Travellers and tourism operators alike are relieved to find that State Highway 6 has reopened following its closure on the 2nd of February.

Following heavy rain a section of the one lane bridge over the Wanganui River between Hokitika and Franz Josef collapsed. This resulted in long detours for many travellers and changing travel plans for many. This was felt by West Coast accommodation and tourism operators who largely enjoy an influx of visitors over the summer months.

Contractors worked up to 15 hours a day diverting the flooded river away from the washout on the northern side of the bridge and then rebuilding the highway at an estimated cost of around $1 million. Their hard work meant that the bridge was able to be reopened on Monday night which is 18 hours ahead of schedule.

The repair involved layers of stone and gravel being built up to get to the level of the bridge, using about 100,000 cubic metres of gravel and stone as well as 6000 tonnes of rock. More would be needed later as eventually further upgrades will be required.

For now though, holiday makers and West Coast accommodation and tourism providers can all make the most of what will hopefully be a busy summer season.
