Upgrade work in Kilbirnie's main street resumed last week and shoppers will see some significant improvements over the next few months as the $1.5 million makeover is completed.

Construction began in mid-September but stopped in December so the street could operate normally during the Christmas trading period. Our contractors, Transfield Services, will also be working hard to ensure the project doesn't adversely affect the Kilbirnie Fair on Sunday 10 March.

Council project manager Steve Simpson says the changes will improve the way the area functions and looks. The crossings will be more pedestrian friendly and the street will have more of a coastal feel.

Planting will include cabbage trees and other coastal plants and grasses and there will be timber bench seats and improved lighting.

"We hope what we are doing will kickstart more revitalisation by encouraging greater community pride and some private investment by local business and building owners."

The upgrade should be complete by the end of April.
