Quilts from the Aotearoa Quilters 2012 challenge will be on show at Taupō Museum during February.

The theme, ‘Connections’, was selected by the Quilters Association and entrants in this eighth biennial challenge were asked to create a quilt measuring 60cm wide by 120cm high.

The interpretation of ‘Connections’ could be literal or abstract, traditional or contemporary. Two Auckland-based quilting tutors: Joan Hamilton and Val Waterhouse were the judges for the competition choosing the winning entry and also selecting the quilts to make up the exhibition.

The twenty quilts chosen to tour display a wide range of ideas and techniques. The overall winner in this challenge is Jeanette Gillies of Wanaka with her quilt titled ‘Stratification’.

The colourful, innovative quilts are all made in New Zealand and are touring galleries throughout the country.

The exhibition at Taupō Museum starts 2 February and runs until 26 February. The Taupō Museum is open daily from 10.00am – 4:30pm.
