A sparkling new scooter, Shoe Clinic vouchers and a year’s membership to Zealandia wildlife sanctuary are just some of the prizes to be won in Greater Wellington Regional Council’s Streets Alive summer active commuting challenge, which kicks off next Wednesday 13 February.

Claire Pascoe, the Regional Council’s Sustainable Transport Planner, is urging workplaces and high schools around the region to take part in the four week challenge.

“The challenge is a great way to satisfy that competitive streak or bolster your motivation. Everyone of high school age and up is invited to take up the challenge to walk, cycle, run, or even scoot or skate their way to work or school for four weeks.”

“You simply need to get together a team of four and make as many active trips to and from work or high school as possible. You earn a point for each active commute you make and bonus point challenges during the competition will help boost your team score.

“There are some great prizes up for grabs from Shoe Clinic, Zealandia, Microscooters, Wholly Bagels, Ground Effect and Beautiful Bike Bags. Not to mention all the glory of winning.”

A special invitation is being issued this year to high school students and staff around the region to take part. “The winning school will be treated to a Wholly Bagels breakfast for all participants.”

Schools that are promoting the challenge are Wainuiomata High School, Hutt Valley High School, Tawa College, Wellington East Girls’ College, Kapiti College and Paraparaumu College.

The challenge begins next Wednesday 13 February and ends Tuesday 12 March. Winners will be announced at a special breakfast for Walk to Work Day on Wednesday 13 March.
