Canterbury rider Paul Odlin has upset local hopes across the Tasman to win the time trial at the Oceania Road cycling Championships in Canberra yesterday.

The 2012 national time trial champion, who was runner-up behind teammate Sam Horgan at the Oceania Championships in Queenstown last year, went one better on a demanding and hilly course.

Wellington’s Joseph Cooper, who was 10th off, set the standard with a strong 54:14:19 effort over the 40kms, using his strength on the climbs to good effect.

South Canterbury’s Jason Christie, who was off mid-pack of the 29 starters, was just outside Cooper’s time until Ben Dyball (New South Wales) became the first rider under the 54 minute barrier.

Odlin produced a powerful performance to move ahead of the splits of the Australian before he had to stop to correct a mechanical problem, costing him 15 seconds. He had to push all-out to get home to be just three seconds under Dyball’s time, with scratch man Horgan unable to match his fellow Christchurch mate.

"I was up for the challenge of a really demanding and hilly circuit even though it doesn't suit my characteristics,” Odlin said. “Unfortunately I had a mechanical which meant losing 15 precious seconds but I still managed to hold on to the win."

Hawkes Bay rider Regan Gough finished fourth in the under-19 men’s time trial while Auckland’s Devon Hiley was sixth in the under-19 women’s time trial.

Pre race favourite Damian Howson (SA) took out the under-23 category, as did Tom Kaseler (SA) in the under-19s.  In the females, a strong Taryn Heather (VIC) won the elite women and Emily McRedmond (WA) won the U19 section.

Action moves to the road with the under-18 and elite women’s races over 72km and 102km respectively taking place tomorrow and the under-19 men over 113km and both elite and under-23 men (153km) on Sunday in the Namadgi National Park.
