HAMILTON

The Hamilton Youth Council is holding a series of activities in the city in celebration of National Youth Week 2013.  Youth and supporters from around the region are invited to participate in two events, a Family Quiz Night and a Roller Disco; in addition to an online photo competition centred on the national theme of “Live like a Legend.”

Hamilton Youth Council has been a strong voice for youth in the city; engaging young people in local government and advising city council on issues that matter to youth.  The Youth Council consists of 18 young people aged between 15 and 25 years of age, from a diverse range of backgrounds in an attempt to best represent Hamilton's youth community.

The Family Quiz Night is being held on the 9th of May and is set to be a great night out for all ages.    The Quiz will take place from 6.30-8.30pm at the Link Community Trust Centre.  Participants are encouraged to enter in groups of 3-6, and the quiz is designed for ages 8+.  Entry is $5 per team and the winning team gets to nominate the money raised to the charity of their choice.  The event is smoke-free and alcohol-free.  Nibbles will be supplied and there will be several performances throughout the evening showcasing talent local youth.

The Youth Council are joining forces with the Hamilton Inline Hockey Club to bring to you the Retro Roller Disco on Friday the 10th of May.  The event will take place at the Inline Hockey Club from 7.00pm – 9.30pm.  Entry into the Disco is free; participants can either bring their own skates or hire them for $2 at the venue.  Prizes will also be given out to the best retro costume on the night.

The “Live like a Legend” photo competition is open to all between the ages of 15-25.  Participants are to take a photo of themselves or friends doing something positive in the community to show how they live like legends.  The competition begins on the 6th of May and runs until the 20th of May. Photos are to be sent to htownyouthweek@gmail.com, and entrants must include their name, address, phone number and date of birth in the email.

Hamilton Youth Council Chairperson Jason Sebestian says that Youth Week is an important time both in Hamilton City and throughout New Zealand to reflect on what young people mean to our society.
“It is a time to not just recognize the diverse strengths of our youth but also the amazing contributions young people make to our country. Youth under the age of 30 make up a third of the population of our city - our city lives and breathes young people. Why not use this week to remind us of the simple fact that young people should be celebrate and encouraged. The Hamilton Youth Council aims to do that every day."

Hamilton City Councillor Daphne Bell also agrees that Hamilton Youth are extremely important to the city, and should be recognized for their contributions to the community.
“During Youth Week we acknowledge all the diverse, talented young people in the city.  We should do so all year!”
