Catholic school results on top of list for passing NCEA

BREAKING NEWS: infonews.co.nz can confirm that catholic school results for NCEA Level Three are on top of the list for passing in Taranaki

We can confirm private catholic school Sacred Heart Girls College in New Plymouth came out of the list first with a 95.4% pass rate of NCEA Level Three, with second catholic school Francis Douglas Boys College coming out in second place at 89.2%.

In third Opunake High School with 81.2%, then New Plymouth Girls High School on 80.9% and lets not forget the school thats been threw alot over the past year with regards to the Paritutu Tragedy, Spotswood College with a pass rate of 80.7% in fifth place which has increased significantly after the new principle Mark Bowden was appointed around three to four years ago.

However out in the cold St Marys Girls Catholic College in Stratford have a pass rate of 50% or under, causing major problems for the over 100 parents sending their children to the school.

The principle said she is utterly disapointed meanwhile the top four schools told infonews.co.nz how happy they were to be at the top of the list.

However some questions are being raised about Spotswood College, Spotswood College (Co-ed) is a decile six, which is very low compared to the higher schools on the list, so for Spotswood College's decile the school comes out much higher then fifth place, however the principle is happy with the improvments. 

"Its getting better by the week" Mark Bowden of Spotswood College said. 

The schools that were of surprise to New Plymouth residents infonews.co.nz spoke to was New Plymouth Boys High School with 73.4%, Stratford High School with 58.8% and Waitara High School with 54.5%.

The major surprise was ofcourse St Marys, with 72% of everyone infonews.co.nz spoke to saying they were most surprised about St Marys.

Patea Area Schools 50% pass rate was of "no surprise" to Taranaki residents we spoke to in a survey conducted with 100 parents from around Taranaki.

Patea Area School is a decile 1 school.

St Marys in last place is a decile six school, same as Spotswood College in fifth place.

The results reveal Taranaki girls continued to outperform boys in the classroom however.

Nearly three-quarters of female students in the region passed level 3, while only 66 per cent of boys finished with the same qualification.

The pass rate for Maori students in Taranaki was also below the national average for Maori.
