Canterbury Museum has been awarded TripAdvisor’s 2013 Traveller’s Choice Attractions Award.

Steve Kaufer, TripAdvisor’s CEO and Co-founder, says Canterbury Museum is one of the inaugural winners of the award.

“This is the first year that TripAdvisor, the world’s largest travel site, is presenting these awards recognising travellers’ favourite things to do in destinations around the world,” he says.

Canterbury Museum is one of just 1,264 attractions (out of 300,000 listed on TripAdvisor) to receive the award.

“The awards are based on candid feedback from travellers on TripAdvisor: more than 100 million reviews and opinions, and counting!”

Christchurch and Canterbury Tourism CEO Tim Hunter says the award is well deserved by Canterbury Museum.

“The award is a tribute to the whole Museum team who worked so hard following the major earthquakes to get the Museum fully remediated and reopened,” he says. “The energy and determination to provide a lead in the city’s recovery is remarkable, and the Museum’s exhibitions and programmes – including Quake City in Re:START Mall and the Red Bus Rebuild Zone Tours – are better than ever.”

Canterbury Museum Director, Anthony Wright, says “I’m delighted to receive this award on behalf of the Museum. Not only are we able to share the stories of Canterbury’s unique natural and cultural heritage, but we are also able to present award-winning international exhibitions. This is a fantastic combination for tourists and an excellent boost for Christchurch.”

The award follows the Museum’s block-buster exhibition announcement – RISE – which will showcase the best of street art from around the world during Christchurch’s summer tourist season.

“This award couldn’t have come at a more pertinent time. We have just announced our summer exhibition RISE which will see artworks by the likes of UK street artist Banksy and Belgian artist ROA on display. This exhibition will be a huge drawcard for tourists to Christchurch and no doubt raise our profile on TripAdvisor even more,” says Mr Wright.

The RISE exhibition at Canterbury Museum opens on 20 December 2013. For more information see www.canterburymuseum.com or www.oiyou.co.nz
