The Whitireia Nursing and Health Journal turns 20.

First published in 1993, the Nursing and Health Journal is published by the Whitireia Faculty of Health in collaboration with the Whitireia Publishing programme.

The Whitireia Nursing Journal (as it was called when it launched in 1993), is a refereed publication.  The editorial in the first issue stated that it would ‘contribute to and inform debate on nursing education and practice in Aotearoa New Zealand’.  The purpose of the Journal has been to ensure these insights can be shared within the nursing profession and among other health practitioners here in New Zealand.

Articles chosen for the publication have explored how nursing education and practice can be worked through and applied in terms of appropriate clinical practice in community public health, primary health care and secondary and tertiary health care settings.  They also explore how the personal and cultural dimensions of health care can ensure spiritual wellbeing, family wellbeing, physical wellbeing and mental health wellbeing.

The journal has published articles and identified health issues for Māori and Pacifica people and for other groups and communities.  Some of these issues include women’s and children’s health, health issues affecting gay and lesbian communities, and those who are in the criminal justice system.  The health care needs of specific occupational groups have also come under the spotlight.  It has also included articles that range widely in terms of analysis from examination of broader health care sector practices.  They also extend to assessing government health care and social support policies and their impact of others.

The Journal has always welcomed contributions from undergraduate and postgraduate students along with tutorial staff from the faculty said Dr Kathy Holloway, Dean, Faculty of Health at Whitireia.  “Many of the articles submitted by students have come from works completed by them to meet programme requirements.”

This year the Journal has taken on a new name; it is now known as the ‘Nursing and Health Journal’.  This new name reflects the broader view of the health workforce that is now taken by the Whitireia Faculty of Health; views which are articulated in this, the 20th issue.

Published annually, the Journal has contributed to keeping Whitireia at the top of health education training in New Zealand.  It remains a sought after publication in the health industry and continues to be a collaborative opportunity for the Faculty of Health and Publishing programme at Whitireia.
