Whitireia and Mana Zonta Celebrate the Success of Student Artists

Whitireia Visual Arts and Design student Yvonne Tunnicliffe has won the Mana Zonta Supreme Design Award for 2014.
The award is given annually to a female student from Whitireia Visual Arts and Design on completion of their degree, and is valued at $3,000.
Majoring in Visual Arts photography, Tunnicliffe is based in Kāpiti. She has plans to work in Australia and locally next year with industry professionals. Her business Eve Photography caters for families and individuals offering portrait photography with a point of difference. Imagery with atmosphere and an abstract nature is fused to build a portrait that will be cherished for years to come. Yvonne integrates other artistic elements of her photographic work with portrait images to blend the real and surreal. This is an essential component of her work as a photographer and artist, one that results in a unique fusion of her own commercial portrait style. Tunnicliffe impressed the panel of judges with her clear business focus.
We were impressed with all finalists this year said Barbara Thompson from Mana Zonta. “There were a lot of well-designed works presented to the judging panel and to our members.”
The Mana Zonta Supreme Design Award, established in 2012 is about empowering women to succeed said Deb Donnelly, Co-Programme Leader, Visual Arts and Design at Whitireia. “This year we had four strong finalists for this award across a range of arts disciplines. All have designed their career plans with a commercial eye and a target market focus.” Creative Enterprise is a core paper in the three year degree programme that integrates graduate’s design skills into creative industry careers.
The other finalists for this award were Krissy Wadek who specialises in graphic design, Laureen Jones, hand cut sculptural artworks and contemporary jewellery from Sandra Schmid.
The judges of this year’s award were representatives from the design industry, Mana Zonta and tutors from Whitireia Visual Arts and Design who were all impressed with the high standard of design concepts and finished works presented by all four finalists.
Art work by these students is currently being exhibited at TOAST, the annual celebration of graduate works from Whitireia Bachelor of Applied Arts (Visual Arts and Design) students. The exhibition is on at the Bottle Creek Gallery, Pataka Art + Museum, Cnr Paramoana and Norrie Streets, Porirua from 14 November – 14 December.
