The highly anticipated Hawea pontoons will now not be installed until after New Year’s Eve, Queenstown Lakes District harbourmaster Marty Black said.

“It’s a pretty disappointing situation but unfortunately we have been advised by the manufacturer that there has been a construction fault,” Mr Black said.

The pontoons, ordered and promised for installation pre-Christmas were now likely to be installed some time after January 10.

“It appears that at some stage during the moulding process the central burners have gone out. The operators did not realise this until Wednesday morning. As a result the pontoons have not moulded properly,” Mr Black said.

The manufacturer was not willing to provide a substandard product so there was no option but wait for the revised deadline.

“It’s just one of those things, we are all set to go at our end. I guess the new facility will be all the more appreciated when it does finally arrive,” Mr Black said.
