BAY OF PLENTY

Bay of Plenty Polytechnic High Performance Sports Scholar Amy Robinson was all smiles on Friday night after being named the Junior Sportswoman of the Year at the 2015 Bay of Plenty Sports Awards.

Amy, a Bachelor of Sport & Recreation student, could be described as an overachiever, balancing her studies alongside representing New Zealand as part of the Under 21 New Zealand Hockey team and also representing New Zealand in long jump, hurdles and sprint events at the Youth Olympics.

“I feel like I have a good balance between all three; it’s really important to me to keep this balance so that it creates variety in my life.”

Having recently been named in the New Zealand squad to complete in the Women’s Junior World Cup qualifier in the Gold Coast in January, Amy is one step closer to realising her dream of scoring a goal to win an Olympic medal for the Black Sticks.

Hosted by Sport Bay of Plenty, the annual awards brought together more than 450 guests to celebrate outstanding achievement by Bay athletes, coaches and officials throughout the year. Olympic champion Lisa Carrington won the Supreme Award.

Sport Bay of Plenty Sport Manager and judging convenor, Megan Cleverley said the achievements of the nominees were outstanding.

“The calibre of nominations never fails to amaze me, and it is fantastic what Bay of Plenty athletes, coaches, officials and administrators are achieving. This year has highlighted the number of athletes performing on the international stage, and in particular the wide variety of sports and schools doing well. This makes the judging job even more difficult but I guess it’s a good problem to have!”

Lenny Jenkins from Whakatane High School was the winner of the Bay of Plenty Polytechnic sponsored Secondary school Sportsman of the Year award for his outstanding efforts in rowing, including representing New Zealand at the World Rowing Junior Championships in Rio de Janeiro earlier this year.

Dr Alan Hampton, said the Polytechnic was delighted to sponsor the award and congratulated all of the award nominees, athletes, coaches and officials.

Addressing the secondary school students in particular, Dr Hampton said “Thank you to all of you for the enjoyment and pride that you have bought to your whanau, friends, schools and communities. Remember that you are all influential role models for those that want to follow in your footsteps.”

“To those athletes who have left college, or are about to leave college, there are now an exciting arrange of qualifications at tertiary level here in the Bay of Plenty which can enable you to continue your sporting development here in the region.”

Sam O’Dea, a Bay of Plenty Polytechnic graduate and former High Performance Sports Academy scholar, alongside his playing partner Mike Watson won the TECT Team of the Year for their amazing successes the past year in the NZL Beach Volleyball Team.

Also nominated at the awards were past students Sam Cane (finalist Bayleys Sportsman of the Year) and Natalie Peat (Eves Realty Junior Sportswoman of the Year).
