With three weeks to go until nominations close (5pm Friday 19th of February), 28 entries from have been received for the 2016 Shirley Papanui Edible Garden Awards.

Community Development Adviser for Shirley / Papanui, Trevor Cattermole says there’s plenty of young blood (and bone) in the competition this year however an entry has been received from a 93-year-old.

“It’s a lovely example of how broad the appeal of gardening is,” says Mr Cattermole. “We also have four new entrants and the Community Garden section is looking good with six nominations at this stage. Councillor Ali Jones has entered her garden in the New Entrant section and has been bribing us with potatoes.”

Every nominee will receive a visit from judges from the Horticultural Society where they can talk to the ‘gardener’, share knowledge, learn and celebrate the work that is being done.

Categories include Residential House, Residential Unit, School/Early Learning Centre and Community gardens, and Special Awards will be given for the first time to: Best Tomatoes, Best Yield, First Time Entrant and Commitment to Sustainability.

Judges will contact all nominees and arrange a viewing time in early March, and all nominees will be contacted and invited to the awards ceremony in April where each entrant will receive a certificate.
