The finals of the Wellington Tennis Open are as expected as the top seeds in the men’s and women’s singles will compete for the titles.

New Zealand No.1 and No.2 Finn Tearney and Rubin Statham will contest the men’s singles after they won straight set semifinals over Rhett Purcell and Alexander Klintcharov.

Statham ranked 389 in the world was far too good for North Harbour’s Klintcharov who has an ATP ranking point but failed to make any real impact while Tearney had to withstand the power of Rhett Purcell for a 7-5 first set before he establish himself and ran away with the second set 6-1.

Tearney ranked at 388 will be aiming for his third Wellington Open title in a row, while Statham will be looking for his first.

Top seed Rosie Cheng will take on defending champ Leela Beattie in the women’s final, after both had straight set wins in their semifinals. Cheng beat Ashleigh Harvey from the Waikato and Beattie beat talented Wellington teen Tamara Anderson.

The last time Cheng and Beattie played it was a straight set win to Cheng in the semis of the NZ Tennis Champs, however Beattie has been looking in good form so far in the tournament.

Singles finals start from 1.30pm at the Renouf Centre in Wellington, preceded by the doubles finals
