Living with Arthritis can make everyday tasks extremely challenging.

Often the thought of becoming more physically active appears daunting. However studies have shown that regular and appropriate physical activity can help to improve pain tolerance, mood and quality of life for people with arthritis. Physical activity is essential to maintaining resilient, strong muscles and joints. A good physical activity programme is possible for people of all ages, abilities, sizes and attitudes.

Regular physical activity is beneficial because it:

Reduces joint pain and stiffness
Increases joint flexibility and movement
Develops muscle strength and relieves muscular tension
Keeps bones and cartilage healthy and strong
Helps to control joint swelling
Improves weight loss and in turn decreases stress on the weight bearing joints (hips and knees)
Assists in developing good sleep patterns
Reduces fatigue, anxiety and depression

As a result of this understanding Arthritis New Zealand, with the support from SPARC and ACC, are excited to announce the production of a new Home-based Exercise programme being available on DVD. The exercise demonstrated on this DVD are mainly chair-based and also include a number of exercises that aim to prevent falls. The DVD will be available from your local Service Centre from the 15th of October, 2007. The cost of the DVD will be $10.00 for Members of Arthritis New Zealand and $20.00 for non-members.
