Papanui-Innes Profile Shows A Healthy and Growing Ward

With the population estimated to increase by 10,000 in the next 30 years and a growing number of young families, the Papanui-Innes Ward looks to be in a strong and positive position heading into the future.
The first full meeting of the newly elected board took place yesterday at the Papanui Service Centre, Community Boardroom, and Chair Ali Jones says all the members are looking forward to a new triennium.
“We made good progress on a number of issues last term,” she says, “with the ongoing work around addressing flooding issues in the Styx" being one, and further strengthening relationships with local school principals and the police being others.”
With only one new member on the board, there’s a consistency that deputy chair Emma Norrish says will stand the Papanui-Innes ward in good stead.
“It was largely a new board last term which in itself was not a problem but it does take a bit of time to get up to speed,” she says. “This time we can hit the ground running and when there’s still much to do, that can only be a good thing.”
The Papanui-Innes Board cites ward-wide traffic issues, involving more youth in local body politics, further strengthening relationships with community organisations (including schools, police and social agencies) as well as raising the profile of what the board does, among important goals this term.
“Of course community facilities, cycleways, housing and crime are also a key focus as our wards continue to recover and regenerate after the earthquakes,” says Jones.
The two Christchurch City Councillors on the board are Pauline Cotter (Innes) and Mike Davidson (Papanui) with Jo Byrne having been elected (along with Jones) unopposed for the Innes Ward, and incumbent Emma Norrish with newbie John Stringer representing the Papanui Ward.
