Palmerston North, before European settlement, was a tiny clearing in the forest by the Manawatu River.  The clearing was named Papaioea, meaning “how beautiful it is,” by its Maori inhabitants.

In the mid-19th century, Papaioea was settled by Europeans and renamed Palmerston, after Viscount Palmerston, a former Prime Minister of Great Britain.

The suffix "North" was added in 1871 by the Post Office to distinguish it from Palmerston in the South Island.

Palmerston North is now a city with a population of more than 84,000 and is New Zealand’s eighth largest urban area.

B-K's Palmerston North Motor Lodge is Palmerston North's newest accommodation and is conveniently located, just five to seven minutes’ walk to restaurants and the Central Business District.

Here are three things to do while staying at B-K's Palmerston North Motor Lodge:

Robertson Holden International Speedway

B-K's Palmerston North Motor Lodge is the nearest accommodation to the Robertson Holden International Speedway, one of the best-appointed circuits in the southern hemisphere.  The stadium seats 15,000 people and hosts hundreds of competitors and thousands of fans from all over the country, every year from October to April.

New Zealand Rugby Museum

For rugby fans, the New Zealand Rugby Museum is the first public museum devoted to rugby and features interactive skill exhibits such as pushing in a scrum, tackling, sprinting, jumping and kicking.

Manawatu Gorge Hiking Trail

For lovers of walking and tramping, the Manawatu Gorge Track is located approximately 12 km east, or 20 minutes’ drive, from Palmerston North.  The track passes through landscapes covered in native vegetation.  A unique aspect to this track is the predominance of the giant maidenhair fern. This fern is found only in the Manawatu region.
