The award-winning Waitangi Treaty Grounds is the most important historic site in New Zealand.

Waitangi is a small town in the Bay of Islands, next to Paihia, which is most famous for being the location where the Treaty of Waitangi was signed on 6 February 1840. It’s also where the Declaration of Independence of New Zealand was signed five years earlier, on 28 October 1835.

Manager of Paihia Beach Resort & Spa, Lyndsey Morrison, says guests at the resort are usually aware of the significance of Waitangi but might not realise the historic town is so close to Paihia.

“Waitangi is so close it’s actually considered a part of Paihia,” says Ms Morrison.  “It’s only a five minute drive to the treaty grounds or a scenic 20-minute walk along the waterfront.  It’s certainly worth visiting as it’s a great place to learn about New Zealand’s history.”

Ms Morrison recommends visitors to Waitangi purchase a day pass to the Treaty Grounds, which costs $40 for overseas visitors, $20 for New Zealand passport holders and is free for children up to 18 years.

Included in the Waitangi Treaty Grounds Day Pass is admission to the Waitangi Treaty Grounds and Museum of Waitangi, guided tours, cultural performances and full access to the expansive treaty grounds.

“Visiting the Treaty Grounds and the museum is a great way to learn about the history of Waitangi, the Bay of Islands and the significance of New Zealand culture to both Maori and non-Maori New Zealanders,” says Ms Morrison.  “It’s also an opportunity to see the original Treaty document.”

Paihia Beach Resort & Spa is located on Marsden Road, Paihia.  With spectacular views over the Bay of Islands, the resort includes La Spa Naturale day spa and the Provenir Cuisine & Cellar, both of which are open to the public as well as guest of the resort.
