A spike in plumbing callouts following flash flooding in Auckland has revealed the extent of the city's plumber shortage, industry leaders BT Plumbing & Gas Ltd says.

The deluge in early March, dubbed the Tasman Tempest, and more heavy rain this week has caused a sudden surge in plumbing-related callouts.
But with plumbers already under the pump in Auckland, the extreme weather events have stretched resources even further.
BT Plumbing and Gas director Bruce Trenwith told Newshub that plumbers were struggling to meet demand in Auckland.
Plumbing companies could face major financial penalties if they pulled staff from commercial jobs to deal with emergency callouts.
It’s estimated that Auckland needs an extra 600 plumbers just to meet regular demand, but the heavy rain and flooding had compounded the shortage.
BT Plumbing & Gas says that Auckland’s plumber shortage highlights the risk of leaving plumbing jobs that need doing around the house to the last minute.
“The reality is, if something suddenly goes wrong at home, it’s becoming more of a challenge for plumbers to respond immediately.
“Of course, we do our best. But Auckland’s top plumbers are in hot demand right now.”
The advice is to call your trusted plumber or gasfitter as soon as you notice a potential problem.
“It could be a simple fix if you catch it early enough.
“However, if you wait for things to start falling apart before you call a plumber in Auckland, you could be left in the lurch and face costly repairs.”
