WELLINGTON

Beachgoers at Oriental Bay and Scorching Bay will be able to push play, get some free sunscreen or relax on a Cancer Society deckchair during the holidays thanks to the SunSmart Beach Ambassadors.

The SunSmart Beach Ambassadors service is a joint initiative between Wellington City Council and the Wellington Branch of the Cancer Society. It will be complemented by Surf Lifesaving Wellington lifeguards.

The Ambassadors provide a range of recreation and safety services to beachgoers. They'll set up beach volleyball nets, lend petanque and other sporting equipment to people and even have sandcastle building equipment for the young ones.

For a gold coin donation to the Cancer Society you can hire a deck chair or a beach umbrella - and the sunscreen is free!

The Council's Community Recreation Coordinator, Leanne Parsons, says the SunSmart Beach Ambassadors will make sure all this fun in the sun happens in a safe environment.

"The Ambassadors will ensure that Wellington city beaches will be even more alive, vibrant and relaxing than usual. If the good weather continues, there will be no excuse not to get out and enjoy the beach."

Beach Ambassadors will be at Oriental Bay and Scorching Bay beaches every day between 10.00am and 6.00pm from Monday
7 January to Wednesday 6 February.
