Taupo is the ultimate playground built by nature.

It features an abundance of breath-taking scenic hikes and walks and the luxurious Lakeside Estate Rainbow Point Holiday Home in Taupo is the perfect place to base yourself for exploring this beautiful region by foot.

With a spectacular backdrop of marvellous mountains, pristine lakes and lush forests the Taupo region has a wonderful range of hikes and walks to suit all ages and athletic abilities.

New Zealand’s first national park and World Heritage Area, Tongariro National Park lies just south of Lake Taupo. The world famous Tongariro National Park is home to the iconic Tongariro Alpine Crossing, which is of celebrated as a one of the best hikes in the world.

To see some of the most breath-taking scenery in New Zealand, the team at D&D Holiday Homes recommends The Great Lake Trail.  The trail takes you on a journey along the shores of Lake Taupo with views across the lake to the volcanoes of Tongariro National Park. There are three separate sections - Waihaha (30km), Kawakawa (19km) and W2K (21km). The Kawakawa and W2K sections start/finish in the village of Kinloch and are suitable for shorter walks if you return the same way.

Want to view life from the top? Then check out the Mount Tauhara trail! Mount Tauhara is a culturally significant landmark for local Maori. This 2.5km trail winds it way up to the summit at 1,088 metres. Once you get to the top you are greeted with panoramic views over Lake Taupo and the central North Island. This trail can be challenging and steep in places, so be prepared by wearing sturdy footwear and taking plenty of water.

For an easier walk, try the Waihora Lagoon Walking Track. This track is perfect for an easy, flat walk into a small rain-fed lake surrounded by tall kahikatea and rimu trees. The viewing platform provides a serene spot for a quiet moment of bird watching. This track is best enjoyed after rainfall to appreciate the mirror effect of the lake.
