Bachelor Of Creative Industries Graduate Lands Job At Weta

For film buff and Bachelor of Creative Industries graduate Scott Boardman, working at Weta really is a dream come true.

For as long as he can remember Scott has been passionate about film and after working as a furniture maker for six years, he decided to pursue a career in film and art.

To achieve this goal, Scott enrolled in Toi Ohomai’s Bachelor of Creative Industries (Visual Art), graduating in 2016 with the ultimate goal of working in the film industry.

During this time Scott applied for a number of different jobs at Weta Workshop – New Zealand’s internationally renowned special effects, prop and costume company.

His perseverance paid off when he was recently contacted by Weta and hired as a technician in Weta’s costume department.

“I’m so excited about being part of the Weta Workshop team and living in Wellington – a city that’s surrounded by an arts culture. I have wanted to work at Weta for a long time so it’s great to actually be here helping to create and work on some amazing projects,” says Scott.

Scott says that the knowledge, skills and industry connections that he made while studying at Toi Ohomai helped him land this dream role.

“I really enjoyed the diversity that the Bachelor of Creative Industries offered. We were able to create our own body of work each semester. It was neat that each discipline had its own working space and we had the freedom to create what we wanted and then exhibit the work the way we wanted – with guidance from tutors of course,” says Scott.

Study wasn’t without its challenges for Scott who is dyslexic. He says he often relied on tutors and fellow students to help him put together the necessary words to explain his work and create contextual statements for his art. Scott is a multidisciplinary visual artist who creates sculpture, videography, photography and performance art.

“Public speaking is something else I’m not confident doing, but the positivity I received from tutors and fellow students who believed in me and pushed me out of my comfort zone allowed me to grow as a person and as an artist,” he says.

Scott has some advice for anyone considering studying: “If you’re passionate enough you can do anything you put your mind to.”
