Skiers and snowboarders got the first fix of powder on Saturday, June 2nd when Coronet Peak opened two weeks early for a one-day taster ahead of the season which officially started on June 16. It joins a raft of other ski fields that opened recently, including The Remarkables, also in Queenstown, marking the winter season well and truly begun.

For visitors who want to experience Queenstown’s sights and want to get out on the snow and take some photos of the area with a local pilot, tourism company Heli Tours has some exciting options.  Heli Tours can organise snow shoeing tours on top of The Remarkables. They can also arrange alpine landing for those consider snowshoeing.

Visitors can walk along a snow-covered ridge, stopping for tea and coffee at a spot where they can look down into the Wakitipu basin, over to Mt Cook and Mt Aspiring and down into Gibston Valley. The Heli Snowshoeing tour is a fantastic way to experience the mountains and make some snowballs and even a snowcave.  Snowshoeing is an excellent way to experience winter. Another helicopter ride that is highly recommended takes visitors over The Remarkables ski field with a snow landing.  Early morning flights are beautiful with the sun rising over Queenstown and the Southern Alps, perfect for amazing photos.

Heli Tours is the only private and locally-owned helicopter company flying from Queenstown. It is owned and operated by Paul and Katherine Mitchell. The company operates from its base at Queenstown International Airport. They have been recognised as one of the highest-quality, safe and sustainable tourism businesses in the country. With the Qualmark Silver Award, on their first application, it is providing tourists unique and safe experiences that include snow and glacier landings, wine tours, Milford and Dusky Sound trips and personalised custom tours.
