Eco-Friendly Antifouling Company Marine Protection Solutions New Zealand Are Keeping It In The Family

Boating is in the blood for antifouling company Marine Protection Solutions New Zealand, which is run by the father and son team of Glenn and Mitchell Clough.

The successful company, which specialises in environmentally friendly, biocide-free antifouling systems, was founded in October 2016 after a trip to Europe, which gave the team a chance to see the products first-hand, undertake a training course, and then bring the technology home to New Zealand, where they felt it could make a difference to fellow boat-lovers.

“We could see that there was a need for this type of technology in the market to have a positive future for providing an alternative to conventional antifouling methods,” says Mitchell, who is Director at Marine Protection Solutions New Zealand.

The goal was to provide top-quality protection to boat hulls, both above and below the water, as well as using an eco-friendly system that would protect the environment and the marine life within it. Most antifouling systems contain biocide to prevent growth on the boat hull, however this can end up having a greater adverse effect on marine life.

Both Mitchell and Glenn have been boating all their lives and take pride in their product’s ability to protect both the ocean and the hulls of the boats that traverse it.

“It gives us great satisfaction knowing our products do not have any negative effect on the marine environment,” Mitchell says.

“We have always had boats in the family and always enjoy being on the water, either sailing or fishing. Antifouling (not done by us) always looked like a terrible job, and the chemicals needed to keep the growth away was quite harmful to other marine species.”

The duo says that working together as father and son is rewarding and satisfying to both, with Mitchell’s hands-on experience and Glenn’s prior business experience allowing them to learn from each other as they work.
