The following can be attributed to Lawyer, Adina Thorn from Adina Thorn Lawyers:

We would encourage anyone who has had Brilliance Steel steel mesh, used in or on their property, to contact us to join the proposed class action against companies that have supplied non-compliant steel mesh product to customers.

The announcement today of the $540,000 penalty against Brilliance Steel, a company that has a 2% share of the steel mesh market in New Zealand, comes on the heels of an announcement expected any day, on the penalty to be paid by Steel and Tube, a company which has a much greater share of the steel mesh market in NZ.

Last November, Steel & Tube pleaded guilty to 24 of 29 charges from the Commerce Commission relating to false and misleading representations concerning 500E Earthquake grade steel mesh. The mesh was sold between approximately March 2012 and April 2016.

People can be confident that the non-compliant steel will not affect the structural integrity of their homes however it is not the product they understood they were getting or paid for, so we believe they are entitled to compensation for that.

As we have a funder on board, there will be no financial outlay required from claimants and even if they don’t know if they have the non-complaint steel mesh, we will investigate this for them.

We have more than 600 registrations of interest for the class action and are receiving inquiries every day. We envisage that number will increase considerably after the Steel & Tube announcement in the coming days.
