Recently revitalised and more idyllic than ever, the private and intimate sanctuary of Crusoe’s Retreat in Fiji is now gearing up for one of its countries’ most significant public holidays – Fiji Day.
Celebrated on October 10th every year, Fiji Day was created to commemorate two anniversaries at once – the signing of the Deed of Cession in 1874, which began the century-long process of Fiji gaining independence from British rule, and the same date in 1970, when Fiji finally became a fully independent nation.
Fiji Day, which will take place on Wednesday this year, is eagerly anticipated at Crusoe’s Retreat, with both good fun and great deals on offer at the beautiful resort to celebrate this Fijian holiday.
“We’ve got bilibili (bamboo raft) races, food stalls by the beach, all sorts of fun at Crusoe’s this Fiji Day,” says Scott Lee at Crusoe’s Retreat in Fiji.
“We had similar things at last New Year’s, and we’re really looking forward to this Fiji Day.”
Fiji Day is preceded by Fiji Week, which is a period of celebration throughout the country. The main event for Fiji Day takes place in Labasa, on the Fijian Island of Vanua Levu, where the locals dress up, perform re-enactments, put on cultural and religious performances, host a military parade, and more. However, those on Viti Levu, the largest of the Fijian Island and home to Crusoe’s Retreat, will have no shortage of opportunities to celebrate Fiji day at Crusoe’s Retreat this year!
